Las Vegas

In less than 12 hours, I am leaving for Las Vegas with my sister and a bunch of friends.  Months ago, a Facebook page was started to keep the large group updated on plans and progress.  Instead, the conversation has turned into this: Sister:  I’m making my packing list right now!  It says: swimsuit, swimsuit, dress, dress, dress, champagne. Me:  Vegas packing list: too many dresses, some swimsuits, vodka, Advil, Pepto Bismol (Sadly, I have not been practicing), hangover... Read More

Future Plans

Playing on a Dinghy Yesterday, my sister and I had this e-mail exchange: Sister:  Screw this whole job s***.  Let’s join the cast of Whale Wars, play with whales and dolphins around the world, and become famous, famous reality TV stars. Me:  Okay, I’m in.  The whole no pay thing is totally made up for by the reality TV star aspect of the gig.  Does drinking Corona’s on a 50 foot boat count as experience?  We might... Read More

Road Trip: Iowa-Florida, Part II

It looks like I can finally catch my breath after an insane few weeks of work and play.  It’s been quite a while since I’ve had to figure out a way to balance various activities, but I don’t really mind staying busy.  However, for the sake of this website, I just need to stay busy with more interesting undertakings.  Sitting at a desk and writing for hours on end doesn’t make for the most riveting posts, but luckily for you, now that things are settling... Read More

Miami Ice

My dad legitimately likes Smirnoff Ice.  He deems it okay, because he drinks a little, then fills the bottle back up with vodka.  Because of this, our family boat was stockpiled with the not-so-awesome beverage.  My sister and I took advantage of this, or, mostly, we took advantage of my brother’s apparent inability to learn. The final drinking tally was:  Me-1, Sister-1, Dad-1, Brother-10. Also, we definitely could have forced my dad to drink more.  However, whenever... Read More

Back

I’m finally back in Des Moines.  I apologize again for neglecting this space, but the boat internet was not cooperating with my plans of actually being productive.  However, it was a nice break. Anyway… My brother, sister, and I had a lot of fun exploring/tormenting South Beach.  My brother also had a lot of fun tormenting us: Since I’m about 5 years behind on work, I’ll end this with an awesome conversation between my brother and me at 2 am: Me:  Are... Read More

One Way to Make People Uncomfortable

Living in the same state as my family for more than a few months has reinforced how awkward and strange we really are.  I always knew this about myself, but I now know, for a fact, it’s genetics.  For example, this conversation between my mom and the notorious Family Friend (who might need his own section): Mom:  Their dog is much bigger than yours. Family Friend:  Really? Mom:  Yes.  Yours isn’t that big.  You’re always exaggerating the size of your things! Family... Read More

Now, Back to the Regularly Scheduled Programming…

A blue sunset (thanks to Hipstamatic): This week and next are slightly insane.  To put it in perspective, after a meeting, I had this conversation with my mom: Me:  I need wine.  Do you have any, or did the Family Friend clean you out again (joking)? Mom:  Gone.  That sounds good to me too.  I should have Dad go buy more. Me:  He just packed up and went. Mom: Packed and went where? Me:  I mean, he grabbed Leo and went upstairs. Mom: Hmmm…Packed up the dog for... Read More
