Big Sky, Montana, New Year’s 2012, Part II
When I travel, I usually visit a place, thoroughly enjoy it, and cross it off my list. While I do end up revisiting places somewhat often for various reasons (family, friends, work, etc.), the return trips don’t excite me nearly as much as stepping foot in a new place for the first time. The unknown is what keeps me constantly traveling and researching what else is out there, and the feeling I get from seeing something for the first time seems to partially fuel my existence. The more I see, the more I know I have yet to see.
However, Montana might be my current exception, just like Switzerland was my exception when I lived in Europe. When I am in that state, every moment is as good as the first. Of course, this has a lot to do with the circumstances and the people, but the scenery is not too shabby either. It’s about the only place I find myself responding to travel inquiries with, “That does sound great, but I think I might be in Montana then. Next time?” That says a lot about a place.
This last trip to Big Sky Country was no different. It’s nearly impossible to leave the sanctuary of my aunt and uncle’s home without tentative plans of a return. Those talks usually occur on the last day, while I’m precariously perched over a suitcase overflowing with remnants from a successful vacation. “But, see, I have all this ski stuff. It would be an absolute shame to only use these socks once per season. They deserve, at least, a good 30-50 days. And! This face mask? Don’t even get me started.” And, so, I manage to finagle my way back. After this customary discussion, I’m slightly more willing to commence the drive down the mountain and to wherever my next stop may be.
