London Pub Crawl
So, my sister and I went to London. She lived there for a few years, and I have visited numerous times. Because of this, we skipped many of the tourist destinations we visited in the past. However, we did not replace this normal touristing with more obscure touristing; instead, we replaced it with a city-wide pub crawl, or something like that. We took the tube to popular areas, snapped photos of the sites, and casually found our way to a pub. It worked out well, as I like to see things, especially the interiors of quaint and not-so-quaint British pubs.
Because of this affection, this post will center around our London drinking habits.
I arrived on a Wednesday afternoon, checked into our hotel, and waited for my sister to arrive. Once she showed up, we greeted each other with a relaxed, “ZOMG! We’re in LONDON! Let’s find a pub.” So, we did. Then, we met up with one of her former dorm mates and indulged in some watermelon martinis at Eclipse. They tasted more like watermelon smoothies and went down embarrassingly quickly. I quite obviously recommend them.
The next day, my sister wandered down memory lane by checking out her former university. Our sightseeing excursion was promptly followed by a stop at the Ye Olde Cheshire Cheese. That place is rather dark and cosy, so late afternoon seemingly turned to evening with the blink of an eye.
The middle gentlemen in the above picture has been frequenting this particular pub for over 50 years. Talk about being a “regular”.
Thursday was topped off by a visit to Boujis Nightclub and a long, meandering walk back to our hotel.
The rest of the pictures are from various pubs we found walking around the city:
Punch & Judy…Definitely touristy, but Covent Garden is cool when it’s not overwhelmingly crowded.
British pubs are a lot better than bars over here. Somehow, I feel sophisticated in the midst of debauchery in London. Here, I leave the bars feeling like a little piece of my soul is still stuck to the beer encrusted floors. However, do you London people ever work? I mean, really work for more than one hour at a time? Or, do you always get to take timeout, halftime, and commercial breaks at the corner pub with all of your dapperly suited coworkers?

As a none drinker for the last 28 years I can report that I have frequented both the “Punch and Judy” and “Ye Olde Cheshire Cheese” but since I rate establishments on food rather than drink neither score highly for me…..
It is sometime since I worked in the city or even near fleet street but both are unrecognisable when I do venture back. I used to work in Fenchurch street and other than some old dusty pubs, a couple of sandwich shops there was nothing but offices….Lunchtimes were particularly unexciting especially when you remember the www was not what it is today i.e. available.
Glad to hear that you actually work. I feel like I need to give you a trophy or something :) We oddly never ate in the pubs. We always meant to, but never actually did. Or, I take that back- We had some french fries, or chips, in one, but it was also a pub that was playing American football, so yeah.
How can you call 1 liter of watermelon served in a huge glass a “martini” LOL. Only in London are Martinis served in tall glasses, and Margaritas are served in Martini glasses. GET IT TOGETHER PEOPLE!!
