West Lake Okoboji

As I mentioned, I spent a portion of last weekend boating on Lake Okoboji. Growing up, my parents and grandparents had places on the lake, so I spent a good portion of my summers hanging out, boating, jet skiing, wakeboarding, fishing, etc. in ‘Boji. I still love it up there.

Okoboji is located in northwest Iowa and is part of a series of lakes known as the Iowa Great Lakes. It is the deepest (136 feet) and 2nd largest lake in the area. Some also claim that it is one of three blue water lakes in the world, with the other two being Lake Geneva in Switzerland and Lake Louise in Canada. It is a beautiful lake and quite unexpected for people unfamiliar with that corner of this state. It is also a happening party spot, especially over the 4th of July. The holiday is topped off by a spectacular firework display, which most people view by boat.

My friends and I spent the day in “party cove” on West Lake Okoboji and at The Barefoot Bar on East Lake Okoboji. On Saturday night, we hit up some bars in the Arnold’s Park area. We were lucky enough to stay in a beautiful house, so the night was capped off there by a late night swim and some intense Wii dancing. For a vacation spot in the state of Iowa, I highly recommend Okoboji.

Two out of three ain’t bad I guess… looks like I will have to travel to Iowa to complete my extensive collection of blue water lakes…I must admit that I have always include the paddling pool in Bishops Stortford park as the unofficial 4th blue water lake… while technically it is not a lake it is very blue thanks to a local phenomenon – namely the council using blue paint on the sides and bottom…

I must say that second photo paints a wonderful picture of getting away from it all…. “Just us and the 1,000 other boats that had the same idea….”
