“Adam Emmenecker Challenge” at Jethro’s BBQ

I’m going to take a break from my road trip and bring you something more recent. Last night, my friend tackled a food challenge featured on the Travel Channel show “Man v. Food”.

Now, I’m absolutely obsessed with the Travel Channel for fairly obvious reasons. I’ve probably seen every episode of every show on that network more than once, no exaggeration. It’s always playing on my television, so I was pretty excited when I first heard that an episode of Man v. Food was going to be filmed in Des Moines. Immediately, the wheels started turning, because I have a friend who is an undiscovered (hint, hint) champion eater. Seriously, the dude eats 8 pounds of strawberries after workouts regularly. Buffets run in fear when Alex walks through the door. It’s that serious.

It took awhile to come up with a date, but we finally got our acts together and met at Jethro’s BBQ last night. Alex researched Adam Richman’s (Man v. Food guy) failed attempt and prepared all day by:

  • Chewing 12 pieces of gum at once to work out his jaw.
  • Drinking A LOT of water (and peeing 19 times) to stretch out his stomach.
  • Not wearing cologne. Alex, explain this one again…
  • Not sleeping the night before due to nerves, but apparently, sleep deprivation makes you hungrier…?

Anyway, hundreds of people have attempted the “Adam Emmenecker Challenge”, but only 6 have succeeded. A lot of these successes came from professional eaters who flocked to Jethro’s after its television cameo.

On top of this, there is a 15 minute time limit. Our waiter looked less than enthused about the prospect of Al finishing.

No, he seriously did stop in the middle to exclaim, “This is good!”

At this point, my other friend leaned over and said, “If you finish this, I’ll buy you ice cream.” Alex looked up and excitedly stated, “Really?”

He messed around with the pickle, because he “doesn’t like pickles”. Al, you ate an effing 5 pound sandwich in 12 minutes, and you’re going to lament over a pickle? Anyway, he finished with plenty of time left to spare. He earned a t-shirt and his picture on the elite “Wall of Fame”. He also earned ice cream. However, Jethro’s doesn’t serve ice cream, so:

Congrats, Al. Des Moines is proud. And, finally, a video of this whole mess:

Looking at these photos make me 1. hungry 2. want to come home and eat this sans the pickle…

  2. BlackLOG says:

Has Alex not seen what happened to Elvis…..

I’m with him on the pickle though….nasty horrible things, probably contain as many calories as the rest of the meal put together but has much better marketing….

Also I can’t believe that all he got for completing the challenge is a photo on the wall…..Shouldn’t he get the meal for free, a year’s supply of laxative and a life time of slimming advice ……

  3. Sid says:

But … how does Alex remain so thin?

  4. Alex Myers says:

To answer all of these questions:
BlackLOG—The meal WAS free—I mean, why else would I do the challenge in the first place? I also received a free t-shirt…

Sid—Ever heard of intermittent fasting? My primary source of information: leangains.com—great site and I highly recommend. I once fasted with only amino acids for 72 hours after thanksgiving last year…I ate everything in sight for about 4 hours…awesome!

  5. Brooke says:

Yeah, as Alex said, the meal was free. $25 if he failed to finish, but, alas, Al is cheap. Really, really cheap :) So, I’m pretty sure that was his main motivation.

He’s eating a 6 patty hamburger tonight. Updates to come! Haha.
